Arizona Test Dust Test
Dust Testing and Arizona Testing, commonly referred to as the Arizona Dust Test, is a standardized environmental simulation used to evaluate the resistance of components, devices, and enclosures to dust intrusion. It is primarily used to assess the ingress protection (IP) rating, especially for IP5X (dust protected) and IP6X (dust tight), and to ensure product performance under dusty or desert-like conditions.
- To determine the protection of enclosures against harmful dust ingress.
- To evaluate mechanical performance, sealing, and functionality of products exposed to dusty environments.
- Simulate real-world conditions like deserts, off-road terrains, or industrial sites.
Standards Followed in the Dust Test:
- IEC 60529
- IP5X (Dust Protected)
- IP6X (Dust Tight)
The most common test dusts are:
- Arizona Test Dust (AC Fine Dust or AC Course Dust)
- A1: Ultrafine Test Dust
- A2: Fine Test Dust (formerly Arizona Test Dust)
- A3: Medium Test Dust
- A4: Coarse Test Dust
Parameter | Specification |

Test Duration:
- IEC 60529 (IP5X/IP6X): 8 hours (or as specified)
- MIL-STD-810: Up to 6 hours per cycle, multiple cycles may be applied.
Post-Test Evaluation:
- Inspect for dust ingress.
- Functional checks.
- Check seals and electrical/mechanical components.
Acceptance Criteria
- No penetration of dust into critical areas for IP6X.
- Limited or no impact on function for IP5X.
- In MIL-STD: no degradation in performance, and operational capabilities must be maintained.
Applications
- Automotive components (ECUs, sensors, lighting)
- Consumer electronics (smartphones, cameras)
- Military/Defence equipment
- Industrial control systems
- Outdoor and ruggedized devices
Automotive / Electronics / Defence Standards
- ISO 20653 – Road vehicles – Degrees of protection (IP Code) for electrical equipment
- MIL-STD-810H – Method 510.7: Dust and Sand Test
- SAE J575 – Test for automotive lighting devices (dust exposure)
- IEC 60068-2-68 – Environmental testing – Part 2-68: Tests – Test L: Dust and sand
