Clamshell Testing

Clamshell testing refers to the use of specially designed fixtures with hinged lids—similar in appearance to a clamshell—to secure, position, and test electronic devices, including printed circuit boards (PCBs) and mechanical components of telecommunications devices. These fixtures allow dual-side access for testing, facilitating comprehensive mechanical, electrical, and functional analysis under a variety of conditions.

Clamshell Testing Machine for Mobile Phones

The clamshell fatigue testing machine is a purpose-built device for evaluating the mechanical durability and functional reliability of clamshell-style mobile phones. It replicates the repetitive opening and closing action experienced during a phone’s lifecycle, testing both the mechanical integrity of the hinge mechanism and the electrical reliability of embedded components such as flexible printed circuits (FPCs).

Its compact footprint, robust sensor integration, and automated test cycles make it suitable for use in temperature chambers or environmental test labs, where controlled humidity and temperature may be applied during testing.

Test Objectives

The clamshell testing machine is designed to evaluate:

  • Hinge Durability: Ensure the mechanical joint can withstand repeated use without failure.
  • FPC Fatigue Resistance: Test the flex cable embedded in the hinge for electrical and mechanical endurance.
  • Wear Resistance of Shaft: Evaluate material wear and friction characteristics of the hinge shaft and pivot mechanism.
  • Spring Mechanism Longevity: Assess the performance of the spring-assisted opening/closing over time.
Test Chamber

Test Process Description

  • The lower housing of the mobile phone is fixed in a clamp. The upper clamshell (lid) remains free to open and close.
  • A swing arm moves the lid to a preset open angle (between 5° and 180°). A spring mechanism completes the motion to the fully open state.
  • A non-contact sensor or microswitch records the open position.
  • 4The swing arm then moves the lid to a closed angle; the spring mechanism again assists full closure.
  • The machine logs the number of cycles, typically up to 100,000+ repetitions, depending on the test plan.
  • Optional environmental control may expose the device to temperature cycling, humidity, or dust during operation.
Parameter Value / Range
